Language Interpreters are Valued
It may concern some that language interpreters don’t get the recognition they deserve for a profession that adds such value to the average consumer. To the contrary, many are beginning to understand and embrace the important role language interpreters and translating services play in environments like medical facilities.
In a hospital in St. Louis, Missouri medical language interpreters were given photography training and equipment to take pictures while giving interpreting services. These medical language interpreters also documented their thoughts and experiences in a journal for several weeks. In this case these language interpreters work with 83 different languages. Their photos and writing will be displayed at a local university campus until August, 2011.
The purpose of this exercise is to educate the general public on how to be active in your community and how to give back. Legal and Medical Professional Translation Services
Some may underestimate the need for professional translation services. In an interview with a legal language interpreter, who also does medical Spanish interpretation, I learned some great insight on how it is to interpret in a legal and medical setting. This Spanish interpreter described the importance of his profession. He described a story in which he was interpreting in a hospital for a man who was deathly ill. While providing Spanish translation services, he translates each and every word without adding any additional words and remains completely objective. His tone mirrors the doctor in every way.
While performing a medical translation the patient's family asked him whether there was anything more the doctor could do for their loved one. The doctor answered no, but it wasn't until he gave the Spanish translation, which is the same in English 'no', that the family began to cry. It was a moment he would never forget - a moment that reminded him to always provide professional translation services. That accuracy in a medical translation means everything. At times when he was performing a Spanish translation service and he felt further explanation in Spanish was necessary, he would always ask permission of the attorney or doctor first before providing the additional Spanish translation.
