Language Translation using Google’s ‘Babel fish’

Even being an advocate for in-person (human) language translation services, it is still fascinating to learn about the advancement of translation services using tools like Google’s Babel fish. There was an interview conducted recently with one of Google’s Translate research scientist that offered some insight in the progress of this tool.

The scientist provided the following information regarding this translation service tool.

It currently supports 63 languages which is quite a lot. The content for this comes from users inputting translation terms into the Internet.
There are some challenges which include some of the very tough languages. It’s difficult for this tool to provide language translation for languages that are very different from English. This is because English is used as an intermediate language. Simply put, the tool does not translate Russian to Japanese. It translates Russian to English and then to Japanese.
Another challenge is that this tool is dependent on its source data. When wanting to add a new language to their list of languages translation services, they have to first verify that there is sufficient data of the language on the Web.
The scientist does concede that in the future that 80% of languages will be covered by these machine translations, but the other 20% will not be a substitute for a human language interpreter or translator.

The scientist was asked about what type of team he has formed to help develop this language translating service tool. He candidly stated that it was Wikipedia, statistics, and his grandmother that helped influence his decision on launching a set of Indian languages. The scientist is originally from India.

Although I am quite bias and feel there is no replacement for the human language translator, I can still get impressed to learn about new language translation apps like Visual Frames’ Traducto. This app has a translation service for sixteen top languages. It allows the user to translate content and localize their applications. It’s supposed to be a nice interface with easy navigation and a simple way to access the translation service and checkout. This is a beta release. This is a free app now for developers during this beta period.

This will be one of many more translation service apps and even interpreting service apps to come. With so many dependent on their phones when traveling, having a proper interpreting service app or translation service app will be as readily found on phones as the Facebook app or Angry Birds.

I found it quite interesting to read about a duo of one teen Palestinian and one teen Israeli joining together to vocalize their cultural and personal experiences in a documentary entitled “Deaf Jam”. I really shouldn’t say vocalize since the Israeli teen is deaf and will be using American Sign Language translation. This film introduces a new form of slam poetry since it is a collaboration of someone who is deaf and someone who can hear.

One can be certain that more and more performances whether on stage or in cinemas, will require language translation or some kind of foreign translation service. The immigrant population is only getting bigger and the deaf and hard of hearing community is only getting more and more active. I was truly moved when reading about a Bosnia refugee who came to the US in 1997 with no knowledge of English and now currently owns his own language interpreting services company. His story is quite unique. As a police officer he would use his knowledge of Bosnian and English to providing translation services to the refugee community, but not always in the capacity of a police officer. He actually worked for a language translation company but was not happy with how the company operated. So he ventured out to start his own language translation company.
